The routes are made of both existing national bike routes — such as the Dutch LF-Routes, the German D-Routes, and the British National Cycle Network — and existing general purpose roads, together with new stretches of cycle routes to connect them.COMMON FEATURE: Avoid steep climbs.

YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15X3YrcKf4QCars don’t get much more iconic than the Peel P.50, especially after Jeremy Clarkson’s feature on it back in the day. But what happens when you take the smallest car in the world and test it for genuine performance, outside of just tootling around an office at the BBC? Well, Mike Fernie set out to find an answer to that question on track, as well as introducing a hateful rival of the Peel. Check out Alex’s P.50 on his channel here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCunj...Includes Alex narrating about how busy the A9 gets, confirming for me that this road is to be avoided.

NWTV. (2017, February 5). The road to Cape Wrath [Video]. YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKpoEB7GDH0Well, actually, it’s the road *from* Cape Wrath. The weather as we drove towards the famous cape was simply terrible, but by the time we had spent an hour there the sky had cleared, the sun was shining and I filmed most of the trip, so this film is just excerpts from the hour-long journey. Mind you, nothing had improved the road, which is simply terrible. I don’t think the driver got out of second gear once in the twelve miles except for a short stretch of a couple of hundred yards when he ventured into third and our spines paid the penalty of his indecent haste! Oh, and the ferry across to the start of the road is nothing more than a small motor boat. Not a trip for the faint-hearted.

The National Byway. (2021). It runs along quiet roads, rather than a mixture of roads and tracks like the National Cycle Network, making it more appropriate for road bikes. The route is managed by the registered charity ‘The National Byway’, with Patron Viscount Linley and President Lord Foster of Thames Bank. Cycling Britain describes the route as offering ‘over 4000 miles of safe and easy-to-follow signposted cycle routes around the UK.’ Maps are available from the National Byway web site and Sustrans. The National Byway has received over one million pounds of funding for various projects from the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme.

At the time of construction it was believed that the gradients would be too much for locomotives and the engineers chose to build the line with steep gradients. When taken over the North Eastern Railway in the 1850s technology had long since moved on and the route was locomotive operated until final closure in 1991 when Murton Colliery closed. Passenger services were withdrawn in 1952. The steepness of the line up to Murton was one of the sharpest gradients on the railway network and used for locomotive trials.Click on the NZ link for more photos of other parts of the route.
